Wikis > The Carolinas Campaign

Following Maj. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s arrival in Savannah, Georgia on December 21, 1864, achieving the objective of the “March to the Sea” campaign, U.S. Army commander Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant suggested deploying Sherman’s Army of the Cumberland to assist in Virginia by invading Petersburg from the sea. Sherman, however, thought it more prudent to initiate a massive drive to the north through South and North Carolina, effectively undermining southern resolve and also conquering the South Carolina harbor of Charleston, avenging the starting shots fired by the rebels to begin the war.
