Overview

Following the development of the transistor, a method was devised in the 1950s by Jack Kilby of Texas Instruments and Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor to combine the functionality of multiple transistors into a single device, the integrated circuit (IC). These devices, also known as microchips or simply chips, became a major stepping stone in the evolution of the digital age, and remain a vital part of modern day digital electronics.
