As a long time resident, I know the area pretty darned well, but it wasn’t until about 5 years ago that I discovered a hidden asset within the city limits.
Attending a function in 2011 at Mansfield Park, I was impressed by the amenities and cleanliness of the place and was surprised that I hadn’t heard more about it. I later found out that the venue is used rather frequently for some groups like the local firefighters association, church functions and for weddings.
In addition to a large indoor hall perfect for banquets, the park offers a beautiful fishing pond (or small lake, about 2 hundred yards) across with a double-decker gazebo partially in the water.
The park contains 3 ball diamonds, 2 are maintained by the city parks department, while the rest of park is maintained solely by the Center Township Trustee. You will also find covered picnic areas, playgrounds, shuffleboard courts and horseshoe pits.
Another feature of the park, is that it abuts the Cardinal Greenway, providing easy access by bike or on foot.
Great fishing, access to the Cardinal Greenway, excellent venue for group gatherings, lots of ducks, all at Mansfield Park at the southernmost end of Eaton Avenue within the city limits on the southeast side of Muncie. The park is open from April through November.
Another great spot maintained by the Center Township Trustee is Chambers Park on East Manor Street in the Mayfield edition on the east side of town. With a playground, covered picnic area with grill and a ball field, its a great place for kids, family gatherings and pickup ball games. Check it out!
