Grand Traditions Celebrated at Homecoming
Wabash College: News Crawfordsville, Indiana.
Like last year, I was Dad’s guest at the annual Wabash College homecoming events in C’ville, though this year was the 100th anniversary of the Homecoming weekend.
Unlike last year, the whole day was filled with activity, as we first met at the historic Caleb Mills House for coffee and scones, then proceeded to the Chapel for the Glee Club sing-along and the annual Honors & Awards Ceremony, followed by the Alumni luncheon where several speeches were made including President White who recapped the results of the Challenge of Excellence fundraising campaign and then the game. At halftime, the homecoming parade passed in front of the home crowd featuring each fraternity (Wabash is one of the few all male campus remaining in the country) as they presented their homecoming flags and courts (queens in drag).
It was literally a picture perfect day and the campus was impeccably well-maintained. The fraternity floats were poised in front of the various houses along the main road, which showed a great deal of wit, work and creative talent.
The game was against Carnegie-Mellon and was “neck to neck” until the second half where the smaller number of team members for the Tartans began to show in injuries. We left late in the third quarter when we were sure the Little Giants had the game in hand. The Tartans had beaten Allegheny College earlier in the season, the school that issued Wabash it’s defeat the week prior, so they were expected to be a formidable opponent.
It turned out to be a very enjoyable day for me, Dad, and our friend, class of ’49 alumnus Bob Bauer. This is getting to be an annual tradition for me and I’m looking forward to next year journey to Crawfordsville already.
